The Wonderful City of Porto Moniz on the Island of Madeira, Portugal.

Porto Moniz is a super easy day trip from Funchal about an hour by car.  We made it our lodging stop after hiking Levada das 25 Fontes and Levada do Risco.  This is one of the more popular Levada hikes in Madeira.  However, there are many charming towns you could stop by if you are not pressed for time, for example Ponta do Sol, Calheta, or Achada da Cruz.

It  is also a perfect starting point for exploring the stunning Fanal Forest.  It is a mystical and enchanting place known for its ancient laurel trees and fog-draped hiking trails. It is part of the Laurissilva Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site within the Parque Natural da Madeira (Madeira Natural Park).

This is the largest surviving area of primary laurel forest, a vegetation type now confined to the Azores, Madeira, and the Canary Islands. These forests support diverse ecological niches, intact ecosystem processes, and crucially maintain Madeira’s hydrological balance. Biodiversity is vital, with at least 76 endemic vascular plant species, numerous endemic invertebrates, and two endemic birds, including the iconic Madeiran Laurel Pigeon.

We were drawn to Porto Moniz because it’s on the northwestern side of the island and has these natural swimming pools made by volcanic lava filled with super clear seawater. During our mid-January visit, the waves crashing into the pool were super exciting for everyone watching!

While you’re in the pool, you can see the amazing landscape around it, the stunning views of the coast, the rugged cliffs, and the Atlantic Ocean. We looked back at the road we took to get to the town and were blown away by how winding and steep it was!

And guess what? You can even see marine life just by looking around! You’ll spot fish swimming around.

The pools are open all year round from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the winter and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the summer. It’s €3 to enter the complex.

The second set of natural swimming pools are near the entrance of the village by the Madeira Aquarium. Look for the Cachalote restaurant, and you’ll see the pools. They’re free! These pools aren’t as fancy as the first set, but they offer a more authentic experience with locals and are less crowded.

For our overnight stay, we chose the Aqua Natura Bay, a 4-star hotel for its beautiful Atlantic Ocean view.  It is part of the Sensa Hotels with two additional sister properties in the village,  the Aqua Natura Madeira and Studios by Aqua Natura Hotels.

We had dinner at the Lapa Bay Restaurant in the hotel, which is unusual for us.  However, with its beautiful setting, large menu selection, and a wine cellar that offers regional wines to the best and most renowned national wines.
